CHAIRMAN'S REPORT

-- New Programs and Services Introduced in 2010 --

New York, NY - As we wind down the year, I am pleased to highlight programs and initiatives we have introduced in 2010.  In April, the first agility, obedience and rally trials open to mixed-breed dogs in the AKC Canine Partners program were held. So far, 853 AKC-licensed clubs have hosted 2,968 trials, and nearly 600 mixed breed dogs have achieved more than 1,200 titles. We received hundreds of positive comments from dog owners who had been waiting years for this opportunity as well as clubs who welcomed the increased entries in their trials. We're excited to welcome these dogs to next year's AKC Agility Invitational and the AKC National Obedience Invitational.

We also sent a team to the FCI Agility World Championships in Germany and returned with many placements, including a Silver Medal for "Rush" and handler John Nys. We hosted the successful 2010 National Agility Championships in Tulsa, OK and crowned 6 national champions in varying height classes.

We launched the Grand Championship program in May. For the first six months of the program we have seen a 9.6% increase in Best of Breed entries over the same period in 2009.  So far 3,420 dogs have earned their Grand Championship in nearly every breed. We further enhanced the program by launching a Grand Champion Ranking System that lists the top 25 dogs in each breed determined by the number of grand champion points they have earned.

In addition to this new conformation title, we have also created new titles in the companion and performance arenas with Beginner Novice in obedience and Endurance Earthdog, respectively. For retrievers that pass the Master National Retriever test three times we now have a new suffix title - Master National Hunter - as well.

For breeders, we instituted the Breeder of Merit program this year as a way to recognize, congratulate and thank AKC's core breeders - the backbone of our sport - and to ensure the continued success of our registry.

We continue to welcome new breeds into the AKC registry as well. As of January 1, 2011, the Norwegian Lundehund, Entlebucher Mountain Dog and Xoloitzcuintli will be our newest breeds. We continue to work with FSS and Miscellaneous breed clubs as they strive towards full recognition.

As a new accommodation for Parent Clubs, we now record parent club performance event titles if AKC does not provide a similar title. The Bloodhound Club of America was the first to apply for title acknowledgment with its "man-trailing event" and most recently, we acknowledged the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever's Working Certificate. Our Parent and Member clubs have also continued to donate their historical documents to our newly expanded AKC Archives.

We reached out to the general public this year with our 2nd annual stand-alone Meet the Breeds event. Thanks to our partnership with the Cat Fanciers' Association and Pet Partners, Inc., we welcomed more than 39,000 people through the doors and achieved nearly 500 million media impressions. We also hosted AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Days with more than 550 events nationwide for the public to attend.

Our good works did not go unnoticed as the AKC Humane Fund Awards for Canine Excellence received unprecedented media coverage this year, with articles in People magazine, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and New York Daily News. Among the canine heroes were dogs that worked in Haiti after the earthquake, rode a surfboard in the ocean to raise money for children's foundations, helped autistic children find service dogs and more.

AKC Companion Animal Recovery also donated more than $400,000 this year to assist organizations across the country with Search and Rescue Grants and disaster preparedness.

Along the business front, AKC has added Lisa Gonzalez to the newly created position of Vice President of Marketing and Communications. In this role, she will provide marketing leadership for the AKC to ensure the long-term sustainability of the AKC brand recognition as well as its future relevance. Her main focus will be growing AKC registrations and Canine Partners enrollments, in line with AKC's mission of promoting responsible dog ownership.

The Board has taken other steps to ensure the future of the sport with its September Board Planning Session that generated many new ideas. And finally, in November the Board formed the "Imagining the Future of AKC" committee to review the needs of the sport and the AKC in the future. The Committee, a blend of board members and staff and chaired by Alan Kalter, includes myself, Vice Chairman Tom Davies, COO John Lyons, VP of Marketing and Communications Lisa Gonzalez and AVP of Registration Development Mark Dunn.

I hope you'll agree that this year has been a very positive year and we look forward to an even brighter 2011.

Sincerely,

Ron Menaker

Chairman

AKC/EUKANUBA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
2011 JUDGING PANEL RELEASED

NEW YORK, NY (December 10, 2010) – The American Kennel Club® is pleased to announce the judging panel for the 11th Annual AKC/Eukanuba National Championship to be held in Orlando, Fla. on Saturday, Dec. 17 and Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011. The 2011 event will once again showcase the nation’s top AKC-registered and international dogs as well as the popular Best Bred-by-Exhibitor competition, AKC Meet the Breeds® and the fifth Eukanuba World Challenge.  The AKC National Obedience Invitational and AKC Agility Invitational will again be held in conjunction with the 2011 event. The Brevard Kennel Club, the Central Florida Kennel Club and the Space Coast Kennel Club of Palm Bay shows will precede the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship at the same site on Dec. 14-16, 2011.

Heading the panel as Best in Show judge for the 2011 AKC/Eukanuba National Championship is Mrs. Robert (Polly) D. Smith of St. Stephens Church, Va. and Mr. James Reynolds of Nepean, Ontario, Canada will judge Best Bred-by-Exhibitor in Show.

Mrs. Robert (Polly) D. Smith began showing as a child with Jade, a Chow Chow that was her “closest friend and best buddy.” In 1963, Mrs. Smith and her husband, all-breed judge Dr. Robert D. Smith, acquired their first American Foxhound, which took several Bests in Show. The Smiths went on to breed three generations of homebred Best in Show winning hounds and five generations of group winners, all breeder-owner-handled. She and Dr. Smith co-authored a book on American Foxhounds and have given seminars on the breed.

Mrs. Smith became an AKC judge of Beagles and American Foxhounds in 1978 and is today an all-breed judge. She says her favorite assignment was the Working Group at the 2005 AKC/Eukanuba National Championship in Tampa. Other career highlights include Australia’s Hunter Valley Hound Show, and the Philadelphia, International, Westchester, Tuxedo, and Del Monte kennel club shows. Mrs. Smith has held important posts at several clubs, and was a founding member of the Nashville Obedience Club, The Brandon Kennel Club, and the Middle Peninsula Kennel Club.

Mr. James Reynolds has been involved in the sport of dogs since 1956. As a teenager he was a breeder-exhibitor of Boston Terriers but soon moved to Scottish Terriers. His Renaldo kennel housed five Canadian Best in Show winners and produced more than thirty Canadian champions and fifteen AKC champions. He has also shown Cairn Terriers and English Cocker Spaniels, and his house dogs have included Irish Wolfhounds, a Great Dane, and an Irish Setter.

A dog-show judge since 1967, Mr. Reynolds is approved for all breeds by the American Kennel Club and the Canadian Kennel Club. He has officiated at many of the biggest and most prestigious dog shows on five continents.  On the American show circuit, Mr. Reynolds has worked several AKC/Eukanuba and Westminster assignments and is one of the few judges to twice preside over the Best in Show ring at Montgomery County’s famous terrier show. He has judged at several of America’s largest venues, including Santa Barbara, Louisville, Chicago, Detroit, Old Dominion, and Houston. In 2009, he judged terriers at Sweden’s big end-of-year show, Hundfest.

AKC Canine Health Foundation Launches New Website
December 21, 2010

The AKC Canine Health Foundation is pleased to announce the launch of it’s newly designed website, www.akcchf.org.  While the address remains the same, the content is dramatically different from the previous site.

New features include a Canine Health section that contains descriptions of many canine diseases, information about caring for your dog, including dog training, safety, healthy weight, pet loss and much more; as well as articles that contain detailed information about canine health.

We now have a Success Stories section, which comes directly from research the AKC Canine Health Foundation has funded.  This area takes grants funded by the Foundation and puts them into real-world terms, explaining how what could be considered “lofty science” is actually benefiting our dogs today.

Additional new features include short biographical profiles of the board and staff, as well as the members of the grants committee and funded investigators, a Heroes for Health Research section where individuals can create their own fundraising pages, and a list of research projects that need participation.

The new website continues to feature our Genome Barks podcast series, upcoming events, news releases, and other important information about the AKC Canine Health Foundation.

Sign-up and establish a user name and password for the site.  Signing up will enable you to customize your email preferences and update your contact information at anytime.

Please take a moment to explore our updated website – we think you’ll enjoy it!  And please consider the supporting this important canine health research as you reflect on your end of year giving plans.  Every little bit helps!
