March 2008 Newsletter

Hello Everyone,

Everyone probably knows about the change in the meeting this month. I sent out a special e-mail but for those of you that don’t know, we have been invited to have our meeting at the Newton County Sheriff’s Department.

The Conyers Kennel Club donated $3000.00 for the purchase of a Belgian Malinois drug dog for the Newton County Sheriff's office.  Sgt. Sonny Goodson called Erin Mayfield and invited our club to have our next meeting on Monday, March 10, at the Sheriff's Department.  They have an auditorium, and will feed us dinner, and want to "unveil the dog."  They are very excited about this!  We will start at 6:30 as usual.

The Newton County Sheriff's department is located at 15151 Alcovy -Jersey Rd, N.E., Covington, Ga.

Most everyone has responded back to me to say if you would be there or not.  If you have not responded please contact Sandra McCurry or Erin Mayfield.  We hope to see everyone there.

The New Phone List

Pat Broxon is putting together the new phone list.  Everyone needs to make sure we have correct phone numbers, addresses and e-mail addresses and the breed or breeds of dogs you havePat’s e-mail address is psbroxon@aol.com.

Georgia Canine Coalition, Inc January Minutes

The January 21, 2008 meeting of the Board of the Georgia Canine Coalition, Inc. was called to order at 7:40 at the home of Jody & Michael Allgood.  Board members present included Gail LaBerge, Clara Seals, Mike Houchard, Betty Stockdale, Sandy Carman, Lynette White, Maurice Woulfe, and Jody Allgood.

President Gail LaBerge thanked everyone for coming.  The minutes of the November 20, 2007 meeting were approved as published (Clara, Mike).

Jody reported that she and Clara participated in Sportsman’s Day at the Capitol on January 17th.  Our leads and dog biscuits and information were all well received.

Clara reported that we had paid Frank Mulcahy and still had a balance of $3,505.57.   She also reported that we had been offered the opportunity to do concessions at the Atlanta Obedience Club’s Show ‘n’ Go on February 9.

Gail will get the judges for the Peach Blossom Cluster B-match on Thursday April 10.

A motion was made, seconded and passed for Mike to arrange for an announcement in the Cherokee Rose Cluster Premium List about our Microchip Clinic and we would pay for it if necessary.

The date for the next Delegate’s Meeting was set for April 21 with a Board meeting beforehand.  The date for the next Board meeting was set for February 18th.

Mike Houchard announced that Don Watson had triple bypass surgery and is doing well.  Jody will send a card.

Gail reported that the HB 301 substitute passed out of the House Non-Civil Judiciary Committee with a “Do Pass” recommendation.  Bobby Reese presented this Bill to the Committee and Senator Rogers spoke in favor of it.  It should go to the House Rules Committee on Monday, January 28 and then to the House Floor on January 29th.

She also reported that Representative Mark Williams and Reggie Dickey of the Georgia Hunting and Fishing Federation had approached the GCC about supporting HB 927.  This Bill would make it a misdemeanor for anyone to remove an identification device from a dog without permission and with the intent to prevent or hinder the owner from locating such dog.  The current language of the Bill should be changed to more closely follow that set forth in a similar statute in Virginia.  A motion to support this Bill when those changes are in place was made, seconded and passed (Betty, Lynette).

Gail also reported that the Farm Bill passed the US Senate in December and it will address dogs coming into the U.S. for resale by requiring vaccinations and prohibiting those younger than six months of age.  She was in contact with the offices of both Senator Saxby Chambliss and Senator Johnny Isaakson concerning this bill.

Lynette will work on items and logo ideas for the February meeting.

The GCC has also been approached concerning a Bill which has not been introduced and which would allow for a rabies shot exemption in the case of significant illness of the pet.  Gail said the veterinarians had expressed concerns over this concept.

A motion to adjourn was made, seconded and passed at 9:30.

Respectfully submitted,

Jody Allgood

MINUTES – FEBRUARY 18, 2008

Written by Jerri Dandelske

Calling the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m., CKC President Don Watson welcomed members and guest Vickie Carter.

Don began the meeting by asking Jerri Dandelske to read the Minutes of the last meeting.  Minutes were read.  Corrections to the January minutes are that the officers were not elected.  The officers were selected, presented and accepted.  Motion to accept these minutes including corrections made by Don Watson and seconded by Dee Hyatt.

Treasurer Rhea Spence reported a beginning bank balance of $47,336.46; deposits of $5,202.00; checks written $2,871.37, for an ending balance of $49,667.09.

Erin Mayfield reported that all went well with the hospitality for the February show.  She distributed a report on various foods served over the past three years.  She asked for member input on future dishes to be offered.

Don Watson, Mike Houchard and Randall McCurry thanked everyone for their help at the show.

Linda Jackson reported that our Spring Match would take place on April 20, 2008 at the Maxell center. The pre-entry fees have been lowered to $5.00 and fees for the day of the match will be $8.00.

The Conyers Pavilion has been reserved for the spring handling classes.  We are still due a refund of $50.00 due to the lack of lights during the last class.  She has asked members to try to post the schedule wherever possible to bring more people out.  The cost of class will remain at $5.00 per person.

Don Watson reported that plans for the August show are in progress.  The premium list will be submitted in March.  Gail McGrew has volunteered to do the announcing again.  Additional parking should be ready in time for the show.

AKC Delegate Mike Houchard reported that the Delegation would meet in March.  Four Board positions are to be filled.  Three seats are unopposed.  The fourth seat will need to be voted on.  The candidates for this seat are Mr. Fred Brock and Dr. Carmen Battoglia.  The choice was discussed and the motion to recommend Dr. Carmen Battoglia was put forth by Dee Hyatt and seconded by Don Watson.

Erin Mayfield advised that there would be a breeder’s seminar in November with an expected attendance of 60-80 people.  She asked for topics that would be of interest to the members.

Erin discussed her recent conversations with the Newton County Sheriff Department.  They no longer have a working dog in need of a vest but that they had an opportunity to purchase a new, trained drug dog for their force.   Dee Hyatt made a motion for CKC to donate the $3,000.00 required for the dog purchase.  Don Watson seconded the motion.  Motion passed.   The check was written for the Sheriff’s department and the dog will be picked up on Thursday.

Merry Carol Houchard recommended that CKC donate $100.00 per month with an additional $100.00 donated for the months of November and December for the Rockdale County food bank.   Jackie Dilworth will continue to purchase the food to be donated.  The fund will be known as the “Keller Cupboard” in honor of Jean Keller.  Motion passed.

Merry Carol asked for further information concerning the pricing of oxygen masks.  Linda Jackson is waiting for a response from the Newton KC.

Ann Cum will begin work on the updated member address list after the annual dues are submitted.

Concern was raised by several members about the status of the CKC web-site and how current the information is.  This will be looked into.

No further business was discussed.  Don Watson entered a motion to adjourn.  Rhea Spence seconded.  Goodnight.
